Solmax HDPE Liner & Geomembrane: 7 Questions Specifiers Actually Ask


When a spec shows up with “Solmax HDPE liner” on it and nobody remembers why, I'm usually the one who gets the call. In my role coordinating technical support and expedited orders for containment projects, I've worked through 200+ rush jobs — and the questions are the same almost every time.

This isn't a brochure. This is the practical stuff: what a Solmax geomembrane actually is, what thickness you need, how fast you can get it when the schedule blows up, and how to keep yourself from making an expensive mistake. (I've made a few. Cheaper to learn from mine.)

1. What's the difference between a Solmax HDPE liner and a Solmax geomembrane?

Short answer: not much. One is a product, the other is a job description.

A geomembrane is the technically correct name for the factory-made flexible sheet sitting on a containment site. An HDPE liner is what you call it when its job is lining something — a landfill cell, a retention pond, a leachate basin. Same material family. Different words for the same thing.

In the field, contractors and environmental consultants say “HDPE liner.” Specs and standards say “geomembrane.” Searching for Solmax geomembrane gets you the product lines; searching for Solmax HDPE liner gets you the same materials described by application. Either way, what actually matters is that the spec calls out a thickness and a test standard.

When I first started in this industry, I assumed they were two completely different categories of product. They aren't. It was an embarrassing way to learn the terminology — but at least I can save you that one.

2. What thickness of HDPE liner do I actually need?

If it's a municipal solid waste landfill cell, the federal rules settle the question: 40 CFR Part 258 requires a composite liner system, and the practical industry default is 60-mil (1.5 mm) HDPE. Most engineers just write “60-mil HDPE, GRI GM13” and move on.

For stormwater ponds, secondary containment, and simpler jobs, 40-mil and even 30-mil can be perfectly adequate. But “adequate” depends on four things:

  • What's inside: water, leachate, or something that eats plastic? (check chemical compatibility)
  • Shape and depth: deeper means more hydrostatic pressure on the liner
  • Subgrade: sharp rocks or soft soils change the whole design
  • Installation: buried panel, slope deployment, or floating cover?

I know that sounds like an “it depends” dodge. So here's the honest answer: when in doubt, go 60-mil and spec GM13 compliance. The cost difference between 40 and 60 mil is small compared to the cost of a failed inspection or a punctured liner.

And check the permit first. Everyone warned me about this once, and I didn't listen. We quoted a large pond project with 40-mil material, the state permit required 60-mil, and we lost two weeks of the client's bid calendar redoing the whole cost analysis. Nobody lost money that day, but it was a $30,000 mistake disguised as a favor.

3. How fast can I get a Solmax HDPE liner in an emergency?

This is the question I answer at 4:30 PM on a Tuesday.

For standard stock products — 40-mil, 60-mil, smooth or textured — regional warehouses typically hold inventory. Realistic delivery for a large order is 24 to 72 hours, depending on the site location. Special formulations and uncommon thicknesses are factory orders, and those are weeks, not days.

But here's what most people don't see coming: the liner isn't the critical path. The crew is. A roll of HDPE sitting at the jobsite is just plastic until someone welds the panels together. Certified welders, welding machines, and a dewatering plan are usually the real constraint — not the material itself.

Here's a real one. In March 2024, a contractor called on a Tuesday needing a 60-mil smooth HDPE liner for a 1.2-acre retention pond. The site deadline was Friday; normal turnaround on that product is five to seven business days. We found stock in two different warehouses, split the order across two trucks, paid $1,800 extra in second-day freight — on top of the $24,000 base cost — and had rolls staged by 11 AM Friday.

Their alternative was a $50,000 penalty clause for blowing the weekend construction window. The order made it because the product was stock, the client accepted split delivery, and one warehouse happened to be close. Not every rush story ends that way. When I'm triaging an urgent order, I ask three things: what's in stock, where is it, and who's welding it?

4. Smooth or textured liner — which one should I spec?

Smooth. Unless you have a slope problem.

Textured HDPE has a co-extruded rough surface on one or both sides, and its entire job is friction. On a slope that's going to be covered with soil or a geonet, that roughness keeps the cover layers from sliding. Smooth is the standard default for floors, flat areas, and most covers.

The common mistake is texturing the whole cell “to be safe.” That adds cost to the floor where friction doesn't matter, and it makes welding slightly more awkward. The efficient design: smooth everywhere, textured on side slopes above roughly 15 degrees — depending on the stability calculation.

Ask your liner supplier for friction data specific to your cover system. GRI GM13 covers both smooth and textured products, but friction angle isn't a fixed property. It's a project calculation.

5. Is the black vs. white liner choice just cosmetic?

No, and this one surprises people.

Standard HDPE is black because the carbon black content — 2.0 to 3.0 percent, per GRI GM13 — is the UV stabilizer. Without it, the material becomes brittle in sunlight. That's not a color preference; it's a material spec.

White and cream liners aren't just painted versions. They're formulated to reflect sunlight rather than absorb it, which lowers the surface temperature on exposed geomembranes. Less heat means less thermal expansion — which matters for floating covers, exposed caps, and installations that sit in direct sun for years.

So when someone asks “black or white?”, the real question is exposure and function. Buried composite liner? Black is the usual call. Fully exposed with real temperature swings? White deserves a serious look.

6. How do I avoid getting a bad batch of liner?

Get the paperwork. Specifically, the lot-specific certificate for the rolls you're actually buying. Not a brochure — the actual test data.

For HDPE geomembranes, that means the test methods behind GRI GM13:

  • Thickness (ASTM D5199)
  • Density (ASTM D1505)
  • Carbon black content (ASTM D1603)
  • Tensile strength and elongation
  • Tear and puncture resistance
  • Stress crack resistance

A reliable supplier sends this without being asked. If you request it and get silence — or “we'll send it later” — treat that as a red flag. Then when the truck arrives, verify the roll labels against the certificate. Rolls get swapped in transit more often than you'd think, and installing the wrong roll is a quiet, expensive disaster.

There's also a misconception worth killing here: people assume the difference between a budget liner and a specified liner is the brand name, and the pricier option just costs more for the logo. The real cost driver is resin quality, manufacturing control, and the testing behind the product. The brand is just the most efficient way to find a manufacturer willing to do all three. The certificate is the proof.

7. What does “global leader in geomembranes” mean for an actual order?

More than you'd think, less than marketing makes it sound.

On the plus side, Solmax has manufacturing capacity across multiple continents, so large orders are less likely to get bottlenecked by one plant or one logistics lane. And the history matters. If your spec sheet dates from before 2021 and says “GSE Environmental,” that product line is part of the Solmax group now — which means the old approved spec still maps onto the current catalog. That's a small thing that saves a big rebid.

But none of that saves your timeline if the local supply chain doesn't have the right rolls. Ask the boring questions first: what's in stock, what's the lead time, and where's the lot-specific test data? If those answer cleanly, the global scale takes care of itself.
