Geosynthetics That Protect the Planet

Solmax geomembranes replace energy-intensive clay and concrete liners with lighter, longer-lasting geosynthetics — reducing material extraction, transport emissions, and landfill volume.

Geomembrane liners reduce water consumption in tailings facilities by preventing seepage losses estimated at 15–30% of total pond volume.

ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification across all major manufacturing facilities.

Our GRI-aligned sustainability report documents progress on carbon intensity, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing.

What Project Engineers Say

"Solmax HDPE smooth liners arrived to site within 3 weeks of order confirmation. The weld quality after extrusion fusion passed all spark-test and hydrostatic checks on first attempt. This level of consistency is critical when you're lining a 40-hectare tailings storage facility."
KM
K. Merino, P.Eng. Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Andean Mining Group
"We specified Solmax textured geomembrane for a 22° landfill slope where interface friction was the governing design parameter. Their technical team provided CID direct shear test data specific to our geotextile interface. That level of design support is rare from a supplier."
TN
T. Nakashima, Ph.D. Geoenvironmental Consultant, Pacific Rim Consulting
"For our 800-ha irrigation reservoir project in West Africa, logistics and lead time were paramount. Solmax coordinated container consolidation from their South African distribution hub, reducing freight costs by an estimated 18% versus sourcing from Europe."
AF
A. Ferreira Project Director, Agri-Infra Development Partners
FAQ

Common Technical Questions

Our applications engineering team fields questions from geotechnical designers worldwide. Here are the most frequent design and specification queries.

Ask a Specialist

Solmax HDPE smooth geomembranes are manufactured in thicknesses from 0.75 mm to 3.0 mm. The most commonly specified thicknesses are 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm. For tailings storage facilities and primary containment under regulatory scrutiny, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm smooth or 1.5 mm double-sided textured are typical. Panel widths are up to 8 m, rolled lengths up to 200 m, to minimize field seams.

Yes. Every production roll is accompanied by a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) that includes density, tensile properties, OIT, and puncture resistance measured against GRI-GM13 (HDPE) or equivalent standards. For projects requiring Construction Quality Assurance (CQA), we can coordinate with approved third-party CQA laboratories and provide batch-level traceability from resin source to finished panel.

Textured HDPE geomembranes have an embossed surface that increases the peak interface friction angle (δ) between the liner and adjacent materials (soil, sand, or geotextile). Test data from CID direct shear testing (ASTM D5321) shows peak friction angles of 18–28° for textured-on-geotextile interfaces, compared to 8–12° for smooth-on-geotextile. This allows steeper slope designs and reduces anchor trench material requirements. Double-sided texturing is specified when both surfaces interface with friction-critical materials.

Solmax HDPE geomembranes are fully compatible with hot-wedge (double-track fusion) and extrusion fillet welding, the two methods specified in ASTM D6392 for thermoplastic geomembrane seams. Hot-wedge is preferred for field seams due to speed and the testable air channel; extrusion welding is used for repairs, patches, and complex geometry seams. Our technical data sheets include recommended weld parameters (temperature, speed, pressure) for each product thickness and ambient temperature range.

Yes. Selected Solmax HDPE geomembrane grades carry NSF/ANSI 61 certification for contact with potable water. These grades use virgin HDPE resin and carbon black formulations that comply with maximum contaminant leaching thresholds defined by the standard. When specifying for drinking water reservoirs, water treatment lagoons, or potable water transmission structures, request NSF/ANSI 61 certificates and verify the specific grade listed on the certification document matches the product ordered.
