Buying Solmax Geomembrane? Use This 7-Step Procurement Checklist


Who This Checklist Is For

If you're sourcing Solmax HDPE geomembrane for a landfill, mining, or water containment project—and you're the one signing off on the budget—this is for you. I've been managing procurement for mid-sized environmental projects for about 6 years now, and I've learned that buying liner isn't like buying office supplies.

This checklist covers 7 steps. Some will be obvious. One or two might save you from a costly redo. Let's get into it.

Step 1: Confirm You're Actually Buying the Right Spec

The biggest mistake I see is ordering 'HDPE liner' without checking the spec sheet against the project's engineering requirements. What spec do you actually need? 60 mil? 80 mil? Smooth or textured?

Here's what I learned the hard way: In Q2 2023, we ordered a Solmax HDPE liner for a pond project. The spec called for 'standard 60 mil.' The material arrived, and the texture was wrong for the slope. We had to return it, and that delay cost us a week.

Why does this matter? Because geomembrane is made in large batches. A standard lead time might be 4-6 weeks, but if the plant is running a specific color or thickness, it could be 8-10 weeks.

In Q4 2024, we needed a Solmax geomembrane order for a tight government grant deadline. The lead time quoted was 5 weeks. I called to confirm, and they said 'estimated.' That 'estimated' turned into 7 weeks. The project got delayed.

Ask this: What is the firm commitment date? Get it in writing. If the vendor says 'estimated,' assume it's longer.

Step 4: Get the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Verify It

This sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how many procurement people skip it. A Solmax HDPE liner technical data sheet should list:

  • Elongation at break
  • Density (g/cm³)
  • Carbon black content
  • UV resistance rating

Step 5: Don't Forget the 'Soft' Costs—Weldability and Installation

Step 6: Check for Inventory vs. Custom Order

Sometimes, you can get a Solmax HDPE liner from stock. Other times, it's a custom run. Which one are you ordering?

Stock inventory is cheaper and faster. Custom runs have longer lead times and often a minimum order quantity. If your project is small, a custom run might mean paying for 10,000 sq ft when you only need 3,000.

Never expected this to be an issue. But it was. We once paid a premium for a custom color that the engineer wanted. Turned out standard black was available from stock and would have shipped in 2 weeks instead of 6. A lesson learned.

Step 7: Always Order 5-10% Over for Repairs

This is a practical rule. Even with the best planning, there will be small damages during transport or installation. Solmax geomembrane rolls are heavy. A forklift puncture can happen.

Order 5-10% extra material. It's cheaper than placing a small emergency order later—which will be at a premium price and with a rush fee. The total cost of ownership includes the cost of not having material when you need it.

If the project doesn't use the extra, you might have a small surplus. But that's better than stopping work for two weeks waiting on a small roll.

Final Thought (Because You Need One)

This checklist isn't exhaustive. My experience is based on about 15-20 liner orders for projects ranging from $50k to $300k. If you're buying for a multi-million dollar dam project, your process will be different.

As of early 2025, these steps have saved us from at least two major mistakes. One of them would have cost about $12,000 in rework. But the market changes fast, so verify current pricing and lead times before you budget.
