Why I Stopped Buying Cheaper HDPE Liners (And You Should Too)
It looked like a good deal — until it wasn't
Back in late 2019, I was approving a $3,200 order for HDPE geomembrane on a small pond project. The price from the alternative supplier was 30% lower than Solmax's quote. I thought I was being smart with the client's budget.

The ASTM D 5199 standard for thickness testing might pass on paper, but in real-world installation, the liner stretches thinner at stress points — and that's where failures begin.
I learned this after a second incident in March 2021, when my team installed a budget liner on a landfill cover. The geotechnical engineer flagged inconsistent thickness readings across the roll. We ended up replacing 40 linear feet — $1,200 down the drain.
The deeper reason: quality isn't always visible
The real problem goes beyond materials. It's about process control and field performance testing. - What factory QC tests are performed? Thickness, tensile strength (ASTM D 6693), tear resistance (ASTM D 1004), and puncture resistance (ASTM D 4833).
- What field support does the manufacturer offer? Solmax, for example, provides installation training and on-call technical support — worth more than the price difference when something goes wrong.
That's it. I don't need to write thousands of words about installation or welding procedures — if the liner itself is solid, your chances of a trouble-free project skyrocket.
I still make mistakes (last month I mis-specified a color requirement on a 2,000-square-foot order — dumb, $450 wasted), but I no longer get burned on liner quality.
