How to Choose an HDPE Geomembrane: Solmax Liner Buying Guide
People assume that buying an HDPE geomembrane is simple: pick a thickness, pick a color, get a quote, and unload the truck. I'd like to introduce everyone to the surprise waiting in the third week of an average project.
I'm not a civil engineer. I'm the office administrator for a 40-person environmental construction company. I manage roughly $600,000 in annual purchasing across about 15 vendors, and geomembranes are a big chunk of that. - Water storage or stormwater where performance matters more than paper.
- Small projects, pilot tests, and orders that some suppliers treat as not worth their time.
The same product can be the right call in one scenario and the wrong call in another.
Scenario A: Regulated containment and landfill work
For a landfill cell, leachate pond, or mining containment, you're not really buying a geomembrane—you're buying proof. The engineer needs a product with a documented history, resin traceability, and factory QC. In my experience, Solmax geomembrane shows up in these specs because the paperwork is consistent. I don't have hard data on whether any brand is universally 'better,' but I can tell you that when a vendor sends a GRI GM13 test report with a clear lot number, my job gets easier.
If you're in this scenario, don't let price be the deciding factor. The cheapest liner isn't cheap if the engineer rejects the submittal. I've had to re-issue an order because the original product didn't have the required carbon black content—that mistake cost more than the liner itself.
Scenario B: Water storage, stormwater, and farm ponds
For a farm pond, stormwater retention basin, or irrigation reservoir, the priority flips. You still want a quality membrane, but you don't need a landfill-scale audit trail. A 40-mil or 60-mil Solmax hdpe liner is usually enough. Smooth liner is fine on flat areas; textured liner gives footing on slopes.
I used to think thicker was always better. Actually, a 40-mil liner on a properly prepared surface outperforms a 60-mil liner on a bed of jagged gravel. The subgrade is the real project. That's where the hand and stone test comes in. Run your hand over the prepared surface. If you can feel a stone, the liner can feel it too. We now require a smooth subgrade and a geotextile cushion in most water projects. It's a boring spec, but it prevents the phone call I dread: 'there's a hole and I don't know where it came from.'
Scenario C: Small projects, pilot tests, and first orders
Small orders matter. I know a lot of suppliers treat a 10,000-square-foot HDPE liner order as a nuisance. That attitude is a red flag. The vendors who took my first small orders seriously are the ones I still call for bigger projects. Today's $8,000 order is tomorrow's $800,000 landfill project—and the supplier who ignores the small project won't be invited to the big one.
If you're buying for a pilot test or a small pond, the good news is you don't need a custom spec. Ask for a standard HDPE liner that meets GRI GM13, get a weld plan, and make sure the installer has worked with HDPE before. Don't let someone pressure you into an over-built system just because they assume a small customer is inexperienced.
How to tell which scenario you're in
Still not sure? Answer these:
- Does the site need an environmental permit or engineer's approval? If yes, Scenario A.
- Is the liquid potable water? If yes, you need to verify compliance with a drinking-water standard—don't take a 'should be fine' as an answer.
- Is the slope steep enough to make worker footing dangerous? If yes, include textured liner or another slip-resistant option.
- Is this a one-off pilot or a temporary test? If yes, Scenario C—but still weld and test the seams.
Three checks I add to every HDPE liner order
Over time, I've learned that the product itself is only part of the decision. These three checks save me more headaches than any brand comparison.
1. The paperwork check. Ask for the material test report before you order. It should reference GRI GM13 or an equivalent specification, include density and carbon black content, and be traceable to a lot number. If the vendor hesitates, that's a sign.
2. The hand and stone test. I described it earlier, but it's worth repeating: after subgrade prep, literally run your hand over the surface. Any sharp stone or root you can feel will be felt by the liner under hydrostatic pressure. Fix it before you roll, not after.
3. The joint plan. A common search phrase that brings people to my world is 'how to roll a joint.' In HDPE liner terms, that means unrolling a roll and making a seam—not the other kind of joint. HDPE seams are welded, not glued. The crew should use a wedge welder or extrusion welder and test the seam with air pressure. If a contractor tells you 'we'll just glue it,' walk away.
One more thing I wish someone had told me: 'fiber gummies' is not a construction material. I once saw a keyword report with that phrase and thought it was some kind of geotextile fiber. It's not. HDPE resin pellets can look like little plastic gummies, but they're not food and they're not an additive. If a vendor starts talking about special fiber-gummy technology, that's not a thing. Stick with standard HDPE resin and standard QC.
It took me three years and a lot of roll-out mornings to understand that the 'best' geomembrane is the one that matches your scenario and comes with documentation you can trust. Start with your site conditions, work through the paperwork, and treat the subgrade like it's the most important material on the job.
